Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1 and referred to officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of single-seater auto racingsanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The "formula", designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply. The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning grand prizes), held on purpose-built circuits and public roads. The results of each race are combined with a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors. The racing drivers, constructor teams, track officials, organizers, and circuits are required to be holders of valid Super Licences, the highest class of racing licence issued by the FIA.
Formula One cars are among the fastest circuit-racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamicdownforce. Formula One cars race at speeds of up to 320 km/h (200 mph) with engines limited in performance to a maximum of 18,000 revolutions per minute (RPM). The cars are capable of lateral acceleration in excess of 5 g in corners. The performance of the cars is very dependent on electronicsalthough traction control and other driving aids have been banned since 2008and on aerodynamics, suspension and tyres. The formula has had much evolution and change through the history of the sport. Europe, the sport's traditional base, is where about half of each year's races occur. That said, the sport's scope has expanded significantly during recent years and an increasing number of Grands Prix are held on other continents.
Recant Article Showing Change in Formula 1
Article and link poster below...
The Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/mar/02/formulaone.sport
"In the article below, Emily Armistead was incorrectly described as a spokesperson for Friends of the Earth. She is actually with Greenpeace. This has been corrected."
"Jenson Button's car will be responsible for emitting over 50 tonnes of carbon dioxide this Formula One season, it has emerged in the week they launched the "Earth Car" as the centrepiece of their environmental-awareness campaign. The English driver's emissions in the F1 season will probably be more than five times higher than the average Briton produces in 12 months.
Button and his team-mate Rubens Barrichello will race Honda's new RA107 and send about 500kg of CO2 into the atmosphere on each of the 17 grand prix weekends, and about 17 tonnes by the end of the 2007 season. The cars emit around 1,500g of carbon dioxide per kilometre, which is almost nine times more than the amount of the average new road vehicle.
"There is some irony in the fact that Honda are attempting to promote the environment and calling on others to address environmental issues when they are contributing to climate change by participating in what is probably the most polluting sport on the planet," said Emily Armistead, a spokeperson for Greenpeace.
The F1 season also requires Button and Barrichello to fly around 98,752 miles between their Monaco bases and the race circuits, producing a further 28.638 tonnes of CO2. In total, each driver will generate around 54.383 tonnes of the gas a year.
The figures exclude the flights made to test destinations and promotional events, the scooters used to get around circuits and the scores of team staff and hundreds of tonnes of equipment they transport around the world.
Despite championing their "environmental ethos", Honda concede that they have yet to complete their calculations of their drivers' annual CO2 emissions. The new vehicle, which features a huge image of the earth rather than commercial logos, has been described by the company as "a powerful call to action" to join "Honda's commitment to help address the environmental issues facing the world".
The man responsible for Honda Racing's new image is Simon Fuller, chief executive of 19 Entertainment and creator of Pop Idol, who was briefed to come up with an innovative business model to attract sponsorship. A spokesman for 19 Entertainment said the company had undergone a "green audit" and has had consultations with Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace - with Fuller professing a commitment to raising global awareness of the environment."
This shows the Honda's attempt to change the sport. the earth car was known for producing low emissions, but the honda group, did not consider other means of Co2 pollution, i.e traveling from race tracks all around the world and transporting 30tonnes worth of equipment. This has served my research well, as it allows me to see where Honda went wrong. Therefore this could be taken in to consideration, when creating my project.

Test Driving a Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive:
My research started by
visiting my Local Car Garage, which allowed me to test drive a Toyota Prius
2006 model, which offers a Hybrid Synergy Drive. This helped me get a better
understanding of what the Vehicles are like on our roads today. The key
features for me where running costs, low carbon footprint, interior display
constantly showing battery progress and stop start acceleration. The most
effective and important feature was the low cost in fuel and the miles per
gallon. The Toyota’s negative points are as following, engine noise is very
quiet, interior lacks looks and feel and the use of cheap lightweight
materials.

3/8/2012 15:12
Needs to be used more often.
2/8/2012 19:28
I know it's a good thing, but, would like to hear more about it
in mainstream media so I can be educated some more and have more options.
1/8/2012 22:45
what is it? is it expensive
1/8/2012 19:50
Good idea for current economy as long as it is the cheaper
option
1/8/2012 19:15
Great solution
1/8/2012 19:06
would help the environment
1/8/2012 19:00
None
1/8/2012 18:55
Overpriced
1/8/2012 18:50
its a system which could of been developed and released a lot
sooner than now. as oil runs out its funny how theres now a replacement for
diesel and petrol!
1/8/2012 16:29
Currently crap and needs work
1/8/2012 16:12
DONT HAVE ONE
1/8/2012 16:01
Expensive and still in infancy
1/8/2012 15:53
Good investment and Eco friendly
1/8/2012 15:47
Not sure what it is really.
1/8/2012 15:41
A futuristic way to help combat global warming.
1/8/2012 15:32
IT IS A GOOD IDEA, IF IT SAVES OUR PLANET!
1/8/2012 15:21
no clue unless I google what your saying lol
1/8/2012 15:14
It is more efficient and helps with fuel control
1/8/2012 15:13
It's good
1/8/2012 15:12
It's important but not the solution to global warming. A lot
more needs to be done to regulate environmental degradation caused by
corporatations. Individuals are responsible for approx. 15% of carbon
emissions. The other 85% needs to be regulated tightly.
1/8/2012 15:12
Very cheap to run. Much cheaper than equivalant petrol or diesel
vehicles. Cars jus need to b faster and look better.
1/8/2012 15:10
superb
1/8/2012 15:06
it's safe for the enviroment but a little incovient to get fuel
and adapt to plugging in your car.
1/8/2012 15:04
Great
8.
Do you
watch formula 1 racing?
Yes =
9 No = 14 Sometimes = 10
9.
would you
be more interested in formula 1 if hybrid technology was introduced?
Yes =
5 No = 16 Maybe = 12
10.
Could you
please elaborate your answer for question 9?
if
hybrid entered formula1, i would make it more interesting to see how they can
develop the technology further, also it would send a greener message
3/8/2012
15:12
Very
big fan of the f1, rule changing has made it more intresting so maybe it make
it less intresting changing it to hybrid less speed.
2/8/2012
19:28
Not
fairly familar with the concept of hybrid technology so wouldn't really have
any influence whether it was introduced in formula 1 driving... to add to this,
i very rarely watch formula 1 racing to x
2/8/2012
12:06
I
find it boring regardless of the technology.
1/8/2012
22:45
Personally,
I don't like Formula 1 Racing because I'm not speed lover.
1/8/2012
19:06
. Cars
are cars?
1/8/2012
19:00
Not
bothered
1/8/2012
18:55
F1
is the benchmark of sport and about speed and skill. Already a big follower
1/8/2012
18:50
no,
because F1 is about being the quickest on the track. as im aware hybrid
technology cars do not generate the same power and speed as a petrol driven
car.
1/8/2012
16:29
I
can't see what the incorporation of hybrid technology would add to the current
format of the sport
1/8/2012
16:12
i
dont think u get the same speed from hybird
1/8/2012
16:05
I
DONT KNOW !!!!
1/8/2012
16:01
It
could be interesting though it might not. Depends on the use of the technology
and how much flexibility around the regulations there is in the use of the
hybrid technology.
1/8/2012
15:53
If
this was promoted in formula 1, it could potentially increase the interest of
'hybrid technology' by the public
1/8/2012
15:32
It
will be to boring to watch and all you would hear is a wine from the motors
rather then the roar form the engines as the go past.
1/8/2012
15:28
I
DONT WATCH FORMULA 1 ANYWAY, SO IT WOULDNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF THEY INTRODUCED
HYBRID TECHNOLOGY.
1/8/2012
15:21
The
possibility of the hybrid technology was introduced, it would be globally
benificial and viewers would realise that they feel this is an important issue
that needs to be controlled. Will help.
1/8/2012
15:13
I
don't think I'd watch it more jus cos it's hybrid
1/8/2012
15:12
It
would highlight the need to be responsible for our carbon emissions on the
international stage.
1/8/2012
15:12
If
the cars were slower or if they looked different it wouldn't have the same
appeal. Formula 1 is to people that like fast cars and loud engine noise. Will
this still b there?
1/8/2012
15:10
the
reason is simply saving the nature, minimising pollution etc thinking about
echo/systems aswell
1/8/2012
15:06
I
would watch for hybrid technology but I am not that into cars.
1/8/2012 15:04
My Questionnaire:
1. Do you drive?
2. If yes, what are your means of transport?
3. On a scale of 1-10, how concerned are you about global warming?
4. Are you aware of hybrid technology?
5. Is hybrid technology a good use of transport?
6. If you was to purchase a hybrid vehicle, what would it be based on:
speed / looks / price / fuel / size
7. What is you opinion on hybrid technology, expand on answer please?
8. Do you watch formula 1 racing?
9. Would you be more interested in formula 1 racing if hybrid was introduced?
10. Please expand your answer for question 9 please?
Diagrams showing my thought process:
Below Shows a mood board which conveys the greener way of traveling, all the images are collected from google images. This are my thoughts of what i want to get across from my project, clearly showing hybrid energy in formula 1 racing, what my potential audience will be etc...
The other diagram conveys the rout I plane to take in the market, clearly highlighting a niche gap in the market, further development will lead up to my actual process of meeting these needs. No 4 is the rout i want to take, this decision could possibly change, the further i research and develop ideas.
KERS Technology:
http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/understanding_the_sport/8763.html
What is KERS?
The acronym KERS stands for Kinetic Energy Recovery System. The device recovers the kinetic energy that is present in the waste heat created by the car’s braking process. It stores that energy and converts it into power that can be called upon to boost acceleration.
How does it work?
There are principally two types of system - battery (electrical) and flywheel (mechanical). Electrical systems use a motor-generator incorporated in the car’s transmission which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. Once the energy has been harnessed, it is stored in a battery and released when required.

My Diagrams Of Research
These Two diagrams show the way my reaching is heading, Formula 1 playing a big role in my project is finally set in ink, further research will start to develop into what my project is going to be, but first i need to gather more primary research. i will be constructing a small questionnaire based on Hybrid Technology.
My Final Major Project Brief:
As a growing concern,
global warming is still here and is at the back of our minds, but yet only
small changes are being made, this being a general concerns of my own and many
others.
I have decided to look into ways hybrid technology has changed out way of
travelling.
My next objective is
to see how hybrid technology can be promoted in the world of Formula One
Racing, finding that niche in the market and putting hybrid technology into
full swing by 2013.
More and more
conventional road cars are releasing hybrid vehicles, for example Toyota is
leading the market with their Hybrid Synergy Drive, which produces 74.3mpg.
Travelling on our roads is changing; new technologies have allowed us to
dismiss the carbon footprint completely. Hybrid technology is now entering the
realms of high performance racing machines.
I believe this is a
very current issue and that hybrid technology is going to remain on our roads
and hopefully change motor sports forever. It will also influence thousands or
even tens of thousands to think more into greener energy.
The target audience
for this project will be driving enthusiasts who watch Formula One and who are
keen on the green energy and facing the reality of global warming.
My Starting research:
To start my final major project i decided to look in to the things i love, as i was struggling to focus on a specific niche in the market i would like to pursue, 'Typography' is a subject i am very passionate about, hence the diagram below...
The other diagram below conveys my life and all the things i love, below are all the things i love from typography, technology, automotive industry, self development, branding and music.
The key topics i wanted to focus on was car brands and whats the latest development in hybrid vehicles on the market today.
so taking this into the next stage, i plan to research into the following aspects
- Car manufacturer type faces.
- Car brands for the future.
- How are hybrid vehicles being presented today.
- Research into green efficiency cars.
- Carbon footprint.
- The performance associations hybrid vehicles have.
- Car magazines.
- Researching hybrid advertisement campaigns.
- Current issues of the world, (global warming) and the effect of vehicle pollution.
- Whats design consultancies are touching in the area of hybrid technology.
